What is a BODE plot?

I’m an aerospace engineer and the Electrical Engineering guys throw that term around a lot. It’s definitely not my area of expertise and I find myself growing ever more confused about what these plots are, what they show me, and what I should look for when viewing them.

It’s an easy way to graph the gain and phase shift of a control system as a function of frequency. This is typically displayed logarithmically and is very useful when designing transfer functions like filters.

A BODE plot is a picture that shows how well something works at different speeds. It can help us understand how a machine or system will behave at different speeds, and whether it will work properly or not.

Scientists and engineers use BODE plots to test and improve the machines and systems they make. It’s a very useful tool that helps them make sure their machines work well and safely.
