It’s a copy of a movie, for sale or sold, that was not produced with the permission of the people who own the rights to the movie. Thus, it was made in violation of the copyright laws that protect those who own the legal rights to the film.

Sometimes it’s a video recorded with a handheld camera of the big screen at a theatre showing the movie

a copy or version of a movie that was not released or sold by the original creators or owners. like people will film it at the theatre using their cell phone and then sell that version for a cheaper price. the quality will be crap and you’ll likely hear people breathing, farting, shuffling around, etc, but you saved money right?

The term came from illegal smuggling. Originally it meant hiding illegal weapons in ones boots, but came to be more associated with the practice of women hiding curved bottles of illegal alcohol in their tall boots under long skirts in order to smuggle them during prohibition in the US.

The term was eventually broadened to include making illegal copies of movies, music, or video games. For movies this is where people take a video camera to the theater and record the screen to illegally distribute copies. It’s distinct from “pirating” because pirating implies you own a legal copy which you have duplicated illegally for distribution.

A movie copied without the reproduction rights being fulfilled, hence the big wigs don’t get your $8 for the copied movie.
