Yes brushed dc motors are quite common, used to be even more so. You basically have coil contacts on the rotating shaft and stationary brushes that are sliding on them. That creates commutation – turning the coils on and off at correct angles to keep the motor turning, pretty simple. Downside of course is that the brushes wear out.
Brushless dc motor basically inverts the setup so that coils are stationary and introduces electronics to do the commutation instead of doing it mechanically. No more brushes and the motor lasts longer.
