What is a convolution in discrete time signals?

The convolution theorem states that convolution in the time domain is equivalent to multiplication in the frequency domain. This is used all the time signal processing because many algorithms work in the frequency domain, often after a FFT. While the math is much easier in the frequency domain, real signals, including discrete signals, are in the time domain.
