It’s just different standards (organizations/companies) and different capabilities (resolution, refresh rate, etc.; this included the generation of the cable, such as HDMI 1.4 vs 2.1).

There is no deeper reason as to why some use VGA, HDMI, USB/Thunderbolt, etc.
