What is a DMZ (DeMilitarized Zone) on the Internet?

Tried reading about it, but it doesn’t make much sense. How does it protect you, when it seems to open you up to more “hacking” potential? Thanks

It doesn’t protect you, it’s sole purpose is to expose a machine to the internet bypassing the firewall.

They only reason to ever use this would be if you can’t figure out what’s blocking some activity and you don’t know what ports to forward but you just need it to work right this second.

… so yes, it opens you up to increased attacks if your machine isn’t setup correctly.
