what is a prescription drug plan in the US?

I have health insurance through company A (for going to the doctors, etc). I have pharmacy insurance through company B. This is all through my employer.

My doctor wants to put me on medication C, it needs preapproval and Company B declined. But they mentioned they weren’t my insurance, they just manage my pharma plan. What does this mean? What is the difference? I asked them who my pharma insurance provider was if it wasn’t them, but they said they didn’t know.

Insurance is who decides if they’re going to help you pay for the drug. Prescription medication plans are usually discount plans for common drugs. Apparently your drug isn’t on their list of drugs they approve
