What is a producer (entertainment) and what do they do?

Ive never been able to wrap my head about what a producer for a movie or a game does, but they get lots of attention when a project is being made.

Maybe if it was explained like I was five I might get it.

The producer is like a fixer. A director wants to do something, the producer goes and figures it out. So he needs connections in the industry to find the experts to organize the set (in terms of design and such) to bring the proper production value, so it doesn’t look cheap. A director is there to organize the performance and the cinematography while the shooting is being done.

When the shooting is over, in many cases the producer is who handles the cut, what take is included, how it is organized, what effects are included and where. They will work with the director, but their input might be crucial, as the studio will take their cut. That’s why the directors cut is usually longer, the producer had to cut scenes to fit the needs of the studio.

I could be wrong, but I’ve always likened the producer to the contractor in a construction project, except in this case its a movie production. The producer puts all the right people together and bears responsibility for the end result. The executive producer is kinda like the bank providing the capital. Sometimes you’ll note there is a producer who is also an executive producer or is part of a team of several executive producers. Executive is just who puts the money up while producer is a lot more hands-on with the process. There is no hard line between functions though….
