You can “force” bacteria to mass produce any protein you want by inserting a gene inside of it in a certain way. Before inserting it, you can modify the DNA which in turns modifies the instructions of which protein you can make. You can force bacteria to produce a mutated protein, two “fused” proteins, one whole protein but with a little part of another protein inside it etc… These modified proteins mass produced in vitro are recombinant proteins. You can then extract them and use it for your purposes. Most iconic and arguably useful of them all is insulin. Before we had a technology to do all that, we would extract insulin from pig blood. This method is much better, humane and efficient.
