Special masters are a broad category. They’re a third party attorney meant to impartially report to the court on a specific subject. Most typically they are invoked to review potentially protected documents like those under doctor/patient or attorney/client privelege. They examine the potential evidence, as well as relevant case law, and determine what is protected and what is relevant to the criminal complaint. This way the judge never sees potentially protected information and can’t be influenced by it.
One thing that is certain to happen is that a special master will take some time to review all documents. Time which could benefit the defense.
