What is a “special master” in a legal proceeding?

Hopefully the way I phrased this without violating Rule #2, but can someone succinctly explain what a “special master” is and what their impact is on a legal proceeding?

Oftentimes in a case there are questions of fact that need to be decided by an outside expert. The two sides cannot be trusted to give unbiased opinions and the judge might not be an expert in the topic at hand. So, a special master is appointed who has no stake in the case and can give an expert opinion on the facts which both sides must then accept.
