Sabine Hossenfelder just attempted to explain this. Can’t be sure it passes for “eli5”, but you might want to check out the link after you read the thread. She adds a visual dimension to the explanation. I found it helpful. Time crystals are, I guess, a new and unexpected state of matter, which sounds cool.
