mTOR is a protein that is part of two protein complexes, mTORC1 and mTORC2. These complexes are part of complex signaling pathways that regulate, among other things, cell proliferation, cell metabolism, protein synthesis and cell autophagy. It has been shown that Rapamycin, an mTOR inhibitor, increases lifespan in S. cerevisiae (baker’s yeast), C. elegans (a type of flatworm) and D. melanogaster (common fruit fly). The exact mechanism by which mTOR inhibition extends lifespan is not known.
