Filler footage sorta, think about a news report. Between the anchors talking and getting to an interview, they’ll show footage of the event. Like if they cover a house fire, the video of the building burning or firefighters working while the anchors talk over it would be B-roll.

Any footage that is not explicitly taken at a directors advice. It’s usually used to fill in holes in the commentary or footage to flesh out the narrative. Think of those shots of the car driving along the road to the destination, the random wildlife shot, or the ‘look at what nice scenery we have here’ panaromas.
