What is dandruff and why does it only appear on my head?

Dandruff is a reaction your skin has to a naturally-occurring yeast. That yeast lives more predominantly on the scalp, face, and chest.
Many dandruff treatments are aimed at either stopping the reaction or reducing (but not eliminating, this is impossible) the yeast population.
