what is de-ionized water?

I’m confused if it is a marketing term or if it’s a real way to make safe drinking water? If you distill water you are physically removing contaminants, which makes sense that it is safe to drink. De-ionizing is like removing ions, but what does that mean, is the water now cleaner?

I’m not sure why anyone would buy DI water. It’s water with no ions, no electrolytes, no minerals. Ideally DI water is purely H2O. You can test it with equipment that will measure the resistivity. It’s a science thing, not for consumption. Use distilled water, it’s barely got any ions and will work for consumer purposes. Probably not the healthiest to drink because you’re losing the natural minerals/electrolytes normally found in water
