If you can get the population of a country squabbling amongst themselves, they might not be unified enough to oppose British rule.

I don’t remember a lot of details, but India had Hindu and Muslim populations living side by side, and the Brits took advantage of that. It was effective enough that even after British rule ended, the Muslims broke away and formed their own country, Pakistan, because they assumed they wouldn’t be fairly treated in the new India.
