The gas needs to go from the gas tank to the engine to make the car go.

Liquids will naturally settle to the lowest point due to gravity. If you want them to move anywhere else you have to apply a force to them. One easy way with liquids is to make a closed system and change the pressure. This will create a pushing/pulling force through the whole closed system. In a car this is your fuel pump. The fuel pump is a pump. A pump creates higher pressure on one are and lower pressure in another. It creates lower pressure (suction) in the hose to the fuel tank. And it creates higher pressure in the hoses to the fuel injectors.

Thanks to some circuit boards it knows how much to pump and how much pressure to apply.

The fuel injectors are timed with the timing belt so that their valves open at just the right time and then the positive pressure pushes the gasoline into the cylinder where it can drive the engine.
