Its a type of sand. When you move the knobs it cleans the sand off the screen. When you shake it you re-cover the clean parts of the screen and start a new drawing.

Basically the sand is magnetic, and the screen of the etch a sketch is ever so slightly statically charged. This charge causes the sand to stick to the screen, but only enough to hold it in place so tnn at wh ed n shaken, the sand falls off and the screen is reset. The sand is pushed against the screen with a magnet th at is moved by the two knobs in the front.
