It’s one of two processes of bone formation. Flat bones, like the skull, shoulder blades, and pelvis form from this process. Basically, you start with mesenchyme, which is a loose matrix of protein, fluid, and cells. In this process, cells specialize into bone-forming cells and start forming bones right in the mesenchyme. Your other bones form from endochondral ossification, where there’s an intermediate step where a cartilage prototype of the bone is formed first, and then gets replaced with bone tissue over time.
