it is a switch that is triggered by an electric field effecting a part of a channel turning from open to closed or vice versa. But unlike a conventional switch it is done by change the conductivity of the material not via mechanical motion.

A MOSFET is a type of *transistor*. Transistors are electrical devices which allow a small electrical signal to control a larger electrical signal. You can imagine them like electricity-controlled switches or dials, but with no moving parts.

MOSFETs are a specific kind, made in part out of metal reacted with oxygen (Metal Oxide Semiconductor). The transistor is controlled by a voltage inside of it creating an electric field (Field Effect Transistor). Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor, MOSFET.

Think of it like the ignition switch in a car, but with electricity.

It allows a relatively tiny amount of energy (your hand) to start and control a relatively gigantic amount of energy (your car).

Think of it like a tiny relay. You apply a low voltage to it and it allows high current to pass through. Remove the voltage and the path is closed

Here are a heap of videos that explain what MOSFETS are, how they work, with theory and practical examples.

There are also books, often found in libraries. I cannot think of any education tool that is intended such a complex subject to a five year old. Especially to a child who has never used a search engine like google, or a website like YouTube.

Saying that, there are many children who have become licenced amateur radio operators after taking a technical exam, which includes required knowledge of electronics.

Here is one who is eight years old.
