Essentially, neo-conservativism is a political movement that advocates for the installation of Democracy™ through military conflict as their defining metric. Economically, they promote limits to the welfare state and free market capitalism, as opposed to the more traditional conservatives which promote the abolition of both, so center to center-right on that front.

Why is it controversial? Well, to start with, a whole lot of people don’t like war.

On top of that, when the people advocating for war are also heavily invested in and have a lobbying backdoor into the people both making the weapons and doing the rebuilding, the stench of corruption and self-enrichment at the cost of civilian lives to promote Democracy™ abroad makes people a little pissy.
