Neutral means the engine is still on but not connected to the wheels, but you still have the ability to steer the car with power. It’s useful when you want to coast down a hill (if you leave the car in forward, the engine will slow you down a bit), if you need to jumpstart another car, or if you are getting your car towed or pushed (like out of mud or snow).

Neutral is when none of the gears in the transmission receiving power from the engine.

Neutral mode allows the car to be pushed/rolled around. If the vehicle is dead, having neutral means it can still be towed/pushed out of the way.

Also, as you’re switching gears, the car goes to neutral and then the new gear is switched-to.

Manual transmission drivers also shift into neutral when they stop.
