Strategic depth is a term in military literature refers to the distance between the combat area (or expected combat area) and important areas of the interior of the country like industrial/administrative/population centers.

If your capital city is a 20 minute drive from the likely combat zone you don’t have much strategic depth. One of the reasons the US invests so heavily in expeditionary and long range strike forces is to create strategic depth. The US wants to fight wars 5,000 miles away from the US, not in Florida.
