What is tenure, and why is it a thing? Is it different for other jobs?

Depends on where you live. In Canada and the USA, tenured professors are basically on indefinite contracts – essentially it means the university can’t fire them without cause. It upholds the principle of academic freedom, because tenured professors can study or teach whatever they want without being afraid that the university will fire them.
