What is that awful sensation on your teeth when you are eating, and bite the fork by mistake?

I had a roommate who strictly ate using the method of teeth on fork. I cringe just thinking about it. He also chewed with his mouth open and talked while he chewed. Worst year of my life. Teeth on cutlery is just awful, I don’t know why anyone would do it willingly.
