What is the actual difference between shampoo and body wash?

Very little. Shampoo, shower gel, bubble bath and liquid hand soap all have the same basic ingredients. One you’ll often see in there is PEG (polyethylene glycol) with a number after it. The number is how long the polymer chain is and therefore how gloopy or runny the stuff is, and that’s often the main difference.
Shampoo may have some additional ingredients to condition your hair or whatever, some hand soaps have different scents etc. but they’re all just variations on the same thing.
