What is the best way to measure the total effect a country has on the environment?

So basically I’ve been trying to study a bit about climate change and the effects humans have on the environment. I got to a point where I am trying to understand how much each country is contributing to the total worldwide pollution, emissions, and basically everything that might impact our environment.

Everywhere I look, I see that it is basically measured as CO2 emissions.

Is this in fact the best way to measure the effect each country has on the environment or is it just the standard/easiest way to do so? If it isn’t the best means to measure it, what is?

It probably is the best, since it has the most studies/ references using it. So even if there is a better way to measure it, the is (comparatively) little to no data about it.

check out the world data bank and our world in data. lots of metrics that you can look at and play with, but economists and climate scientists all have different definitions of what the “best” way to measure that is.
