The octane number indicates how volatile the fuel is, so a higher number will be more resistant to combustion. Gas engines with high compression ratios (or forced induction) require it because the lower octane stuff would explode too soon.

At the end of the day, the internal combustion engine is just a way to harness the power of controlled explosions. If you get the explosion while the piston is still on its way up the cylinder (approaching what is called Top Dead Center), then you have opposing forces, which causes excessive stress on any number of components—specifically the connecting rod.
