A literature synthesis requires a variety of sources. A literary review requires just one source: the literature under review.
A literature review typically critiques existing research, provides an overview of the topic, and may be used to contextualize a new study but adds no new info to the research. A literature synthesis compiles data across related research studies and reaches some conclusion on how it all comes together based on that.
