What is the difference between “most populous” and “most densely populated”?

For example, according to my research, California is the “most populous” state in the country but New Jersey shows up as the “most densely populated” state. I thought the latter essentially meant “the state with the biggest population” (same as the former). How do they differ? Are they related in any way?

Population density has to with how many people live in a given area, so while California has the most people overall New Jersey has the most people living in a given square mile(or whatever measurement the stats you found used)

If you had a 100 foot building with 50 people in it, that’s more densely populated than a 1000 foot building with 100 people in it.

Basically if you spread all the people out evenly, how close together they would be is the population density.
