What is the difference between RAW images and another uncompressed format like BMP?

RAW images are image sensor data without (or with minimal) post-processing.

BMP can come from any source, and is either uncompressed, or RLE-compressed (a very simple algorithm that essentially replaces rows of identical pixels with “put x pixels of color y here” instructions).
