What is the electrical reason some devices like mobile phones require a working battery even during times when they are plugged into a wall?

If the battery fails on a mobile phone, why is it unusable even when it’s plugged in to the wall?
There are many older electrical gadgets that can work with either batteries or being plugged in. Take an old fashioned alarm clock or stereo. If there’s no batteries in it, and you plug it into the wall it will work. If you unplug it, it won’t work unless there are good batteries in it that are charged. So why can’t a mobile phone work when plugged into the wall when the battery has failed?

Unless you’re talking about other devices, mobile phones specifically often cannot run without a battery because of software. Many laptops also cannot run without a battery, or will notify you there’s a problem with the battery. Some laptops and phones CAN run without one (I used to do this all the time with perk farms).

The idea is that a minimum amount of power is needed to keep the device functioning well, and to prevent it from running out of power abruptly (and I don’t mean hitting 0% and it going ‘shutting off’). The OS needs to be able to cleanly shut down and start up, and “0%” is not 0.00% power. Yoinking the battery while it’s on could cause the OS to fail. It’s not SUPER likely but mobile OS are much less resilient in that regard than Windows/Mac.

The remedy to this is to literally prevent you from starting it without a battery, or attempting updates with low/no battery.
