As a general idea, it’s to keep the peace. The best use for strategic nuclear weapons is to use them to convince would-be adversaries that you have a capable nuclear force and the will to use it under certain circumstances. It keeps those would-be adversaries from doing things that they know will lead to their annihilation.
The US Air Force’s old Strategic Air Command (operated two of the US’ three strategic nuclear forces, long-range bombers and ground-based missiles) adopted the motto: “Peace is our profession.” They did this for the reason noted above.
