Hail is water which freezes within the cloud and then an updraft lifts the frozen water back up through the cloud and this rising and falling happens many times each time adding another to the hail increasing the size until it becomes to heavy to lift. https://youtu.be/tNyDxBBAeeg
Hail is when the water droplets are held up in the air so long and so high that it freezes, and only happens in warm conditions because the hot air rises up from the ground keeps pushing the water up so the hail can form high up.
Snow is when the water in the air instead of forming water droplets, it’s cold enough that ice crystals form right from the water vapor. It’s the dame effect that causes frost, but in a cloud rather than on the ground.
Sleet is when water droplets form, but it’s cold enough that they start falling, the freeze.
Freezing rain is when it rains, but the ground or conditions near the ground are so cold that the rain freezes after hitting the ground.
