The last two times I’ve had dental work done I’ve had a reaction to the novacaine. Anxiety, head spinning, heart palpitations to the point where I had to get up and take a break for 20 minutes or so.

Epinephrine is a vasoconstrictor (makes blood vessels get smaller). This prevents your body from removing the numbing agent away too quickly, so the numbing effect lasts longer.
