Because conservative America created a generation of sexually repressed men that sought ways to discreetly hook up with other men for sex in the 50s through 70s. Glory holes became the rage. Anonymous hookups. Truck stops. Department store and mall public restrooms.

And so gaps started appearing in designs to intimidate occupants.

The fact that most people don’t seem to be aware of this of very telling in itself.
