What is the science behind holograms?

I’m not sure if it’s Physics but I gathered it has something to do with light so I chose the flair accordingly.

Edit: Wow okay so I meant to ask about 2D holograms but after looking at the comments, I realised I had forgotten about 3D holograms that are far more interesting lol. This post is now applicable for all types of holograms. 🙂

Well they don’t technically exist. They’re either very 3D looking 2D images or they have this machine that drips water in a square and uses lasers to project images onto them.
