I’m suffer from chronic pain and, I keep reading that if you avoid things that cause pain out fear of the pain, particularly exercise, this creates a cycle that just makes things worse and so you shouldn’t avoid them. But I don’t get it — it’s not as if forcing myself to do things that agravate the pain makes it better later on. I can force myself to do stuff that agravates it if I really have to because the stuff just needs to get done, but my fear is usually _validated_ when I do.

Many chronic pain conditions are made worse by weaker joints, weaker muscles, worse circulation, etc …
You don’t need to be beating up your body as a competitive athlete or power lifter but moderate exercise helps with all of those things.
It also provides regular endorphins which are good at combating both pain and depression.
