What is the so-called pain cycle really?

I’m suffer from chronic pain and, I keep reading that if you avoid things that cause pain out fear of the pain, particularly exercise, this creates a cycle that just makes things worse and so you shouldn’t avoid them. But I don’t get it — it’s not as if forcing myself to do things that agravate the pain makes it better later on. I can force myself to do stuff that agravates it if I really have to because the stuff just needs to get done, but my fear is usually _validated_ when I do.

Strengthening and stretching are the only proactive things you can to protect against daily muscle pain of going through the motions. If you stop exercising, your stregth diminishes and you start getting worse and more pain, which causes you to not want to exercise, which makes your pain and health worse, which decrease your willingness to work out more.
