I don’t quite understand the use of a gearbox. What is the purpose of it?
Say for example some machine use a gearbox for some reason is it possible to replace it with a motor and a speed contorller?

The gearbox of a car works exactly like the gearset and derailleur of a bycicle, the kind with pedals. It allows to multiply or divide torque so that the same rpm will give you different speeds, or so that you can pull/carry heavier stuff, sacrificing speed for towing capacity.
