One common use of (ro)bots is spam. Not sure if you can chat in Nintendo.
Another potential use in the games is harvesting in-game currency (gold, rewards, achievement points, etc), for use by bot-runner or selling to other players. This means unfair advantage, opportunity for scamming, or just lost revenue for Nintendo if it sells same currency through its own store.
Primary reason: bots.
Wether data gathering bots or actual people trying to hard crack your site. they NEED access to that info, so now people upped their defense against these bots with method such as a human verification text.
Which motivated the bot writer to get past these security, so bots that can decipher text became a thing, and now its like a on going arms war in the digital world.
And the end result is the current recaptcha, using a combination of picture and confirmation clicking . This proven to be successful, for now.
It is not a robot that creates a Nintendo account. It is a human who creates lots of Nintendo accounts, using a robot. I am not sure exactly what someone can do with thousands or even millions of Nintendo accounts as I am not familiar with their system however I can not imagine any of them being legitimate use.
