The term is a bit flexible, but it generally refers to someone that does the sport for a living.

The border between Pro and Amateur is a bit fuzzy. Pro’s in niche sports often have a day job to make ends meet, and if an amateur winds a 1000 or so in a tournament, you won’t instantly call them pro.

In general a professional makes their living playing the sport and being paid for it.

A semi-pro gets paid for playing the sport but not enough to live on and has to have another job. This is typical of “minor leagues”.

An amateur does not get paid to play the sport.
