White noise has an equal distribution of frequencies across a chosen range, analogous to white color that is an even mixture of all colors. Natural sources of noise such as wind disturbing leaves or moving water are somewhat muffled and contain more bass, and can be described as pink or brown color.
You might be able to focus more if the noise overpowers small sounds that would otherwise draw your attention.
The term “white noise” means several different things. The core definition is something close to “unimportant noise without meaning”. Listening to that can be helpful for focus because it gives your mind a point to ground against rather than listening out for minute sounds in silence and your conscious mind can think clearly.
The term also refers to certain sources of such semi random noise, like static.
