Well, a crack that’s over 100km deep is pretty hard to achieve. It takes ages and ages, but it can happen.
Fun fact, they are! In fact the Africa plate is undergoing a separation. That’s where the Rift Valley gets it’s name from as it is where the African continental plate is slowly tearing apart and will likely eventually become a distinct tectonic plate.
