What keeps the individual tectonic plates together as a plate? Why aren’t new faults appearing?

Fun fact, they are! In fact the Africa plate is undergoing a separation. That’s where the Rift Valley gets it’s name from as it is where the African continental plate is slowly tearing apart and will likely eventually become a distinct tectonic plate.
