What kind of ‘bots’ are captcha preventing?

Most captchas are on websites where you have to create an account for something. Are captchas preventing some kind of automation scripts that create multiple accounts on a website?

What are some other reasons that captchas exist?

Yep. With no CAPTCHA, anything a human can do on a website, a bot can do.

Common kinds of automated abuse are:

– Registering lots of accounts
– Creating lots of spammy posts, DM’s, etc.
– Trying lots of common passwords to steal an account
– Use up lots of resources to take the site offline, then helpfully “offer” the website owner to stop in exchange for payment (extortion)
