what makes a bone fracture require screws or other hardware?

I broke the two bones in my left forearm years ago but didn’t require any hardware. So what would make it so I would need screws?

To heal, bones have to be stable. Their are some fractures or breaks that are inherently unstable, such as spiral fractures or where the bones won’t snuggly fit together anymore. These are usually the fractures or breaks that get screws or plates.
