what makes a bone fracture require screws or other hardware?

I broke the two bones in my left forearm years ago but didn’t require any hardware. So what would make it so I would need screws?

When you snap a stick in half, it’s pretty easy to put it back together

When you snap the stick in several places, it gets a tiny bit more complicated

So when a bone snaps in several places, or shatters into numerous pieces, your body is unable to hold these pirces together for it to heal without external support. So by using bolts and metal construction doctors are making sure all the bone fragments are set properly so they heal properly
