Traditionally you had to make about 100 episodes, so a station can air it 5-10 times a week without reruns every month.
If the ratings are bad, the station stops airing it.
Some shows were actually made for syndication. Star Trek TNG. The show is sold to one station in every market. Ratings dictate whether there will be a season 2.
